There is a point every September when you open the door in the morning and realise something has changed.
The air is cooler. The evenings are drawing in. There are leaves on the pavement.
And your dog?
Your dog is standing by the door wondering why you're wasting valuable walking time noticing the weather. 🐾🍂
Welcome to autumn.
For dog owners, autumn might just be one of the best seasons of the year. Summer's hottest days are behind us, Christmas chaos hasn't arrived yet, and suddenly walks feel a little more inviting again.
Ringo certainly isn't complaining.
Cooler weather means better walks
After warm summer days, those cooler September mornings can be a welcome change.
There's something brilliant about putting on a hoodie, grabbing the lead and heading out while the air still has that crisp early-morning feel.
Your dog gets another advantage too: an entire season's worth of new smells appears overnight.
Every fallen leaf apparently requires a full investigation.
A ten-minute walk therefore takes approximately 47 minutes.
Dog owners will understand.
Autumn gives dogs a whole new playground
Leaves aren't merely leaves when you're a dog.
They're something to run through, sniff underneath and occasionally disappear into.
Woodland walks become particularly lovely at this time of year, with changing colours and cooler conditions making them enjoyable for humans as well as dogs.
And if your dog is anything like Ringo, turning around for home is generally regarded as an unreasonable suggestion.
Muddy paws make their return
Of course, autumn has another tradition.
Mud.
Lots of it.
The carefully cleaned dog who left the house can somehow return looking as though they've spent the afternoon working on an archaeological excavation.
Keeping an old towel near the door becomes one of those little dog-owner habits nobody warns you about.
Although whether the towel gets used before the dog reaches the sofa is another matter entirely.
It's officially hoodie season
There is a particular pleasure in reaching the time of year when hoodies and sweatshirts come back out.
For us, that's even better when the hoodie celebrates the dog responsible for getting us outside.
That's the thinking behind The Ringo Pack's personalised Dog Family designs.
Rather than simply saying “Dog Mum” or “Dog Dad”, personalised designs can feature your own dog's photograph and name.
Because there are millions of dogs in the world.
But there's only one who appointed you.
Cosy evenings are better with a dog
Autumn isn't only about walks.
Afterwards comes the good bit.
Warm house. Cup of tea. Something good on television.
And a dog who has somehow taken the warmest spot in the room despite contributing absolutely nothing towards the heating bill.
Dogs have mastered autumn evenings.
We merely provide the blankets.
A few autumn things to watch for
Autumn walks are great fun, but it's worth keeping an eye on what your dog investigates.
Conkers and acorns shouldn't be eaten, and fungi can appear quickly in woodland and grassy areas. Darker evenings also make visibility increasingly important as we move further into the season.
A little extra attention means everyone can enjoy those autumn adventures safely.
Make the most of the ordinary days
We spend a lot of time photographing birthdays, holidays and special occasions.
Yet some of the photographs we end up loving most are much simpler.
A muddy walk.
A dog asleep after an afternoon outside.
That ridiculous face they make when you mention treats.
Those ordinary moments become memories.
It's one of the reasons personalised products mean something different to us. Putting your own dog's photograph and name onto something turns an everyday item into part of your story together.
So enjoy the cooler walks.
Enjoy the leaves.
Accept that your floors probably won't stay clean until spring.
And when your dog refuses to come home because they've discovered one particularly fascinating leaf...
Remember you're not alone.
Ringo would absolutely do the same. 🐾❤️
