International Dog Day: 10 Little Things Our Dogs Do That Mean Everything

Hi, Pack.

Ringo here. 🐾

Apparently Wednesday 26 August is International Dog Day.

I've looked into this carefully and can confirm that it appears to be a day entirely devoted to dogs.

Finally, humans have invented something sensible.

I'm currently lobbying for International Dog Week, but we'll work on that later.

International Dog Day got my humans thinking about all those tiny things dogs do every day that don't seem particularly important at the time.

Yet somehow they're the things people remember most.

1. Waiting for You at the Door

You could have been away for eight hours.

Or eight minutes.

It doesn't matter.

As far as we're concerned, this reunion is the biggest event of the year.

Every single time.

2. Following You Everywhere

Kitchen?

Coming.

Garden?

Coming.

Bathroom?

Obviously coming.

Privacy becomes considerably less important once you have a dog.

3. Knowing When You Need Us

Humans talk a lot.

Dogs don't need to.

Sometimes we simply know when our person needs somebody sitting beside them.

No advice.

No questions.

Just company.

4. Making Ordinary Walks Adventures

You see a path.

We see approximately 4,732 fascinating smells.

That's why we're occasionally surprised when humans seem in such a hurry.

Slow down.

There's important sniffing to do.

5. Making You Laugh

Sometimes intentionally.

Usually not.

Perhaps we've barked at our own reflection.

Maybe we've run enthusiastically towards something before becoming frightened by a leaf.

Either way, you're laughing.

Mission accomplished.

6. Knowing Exactly Where the Treats Are

You haven't hidden them.

We've watched you put them there.

We know the cupboard.

We know the packet.

We know the sound.

Resistance is pointless.

7. Decorating Your Clothes

Some people call it shedding.

Here at The Ringo Pack we prefer the scientifically accurate term:

Dog Glitter.

You're welcome.

8. Stealing Your Favourite Seat

You bought the sofa.

You pay for the house.

But let's not get bogged down in unnecessary administrative details.

That seat is ours now.

9. Getting You Outside

There are mornings when the weather isn't great and staying indoors sounds tempting.

Then somebody looks at you.

🐶

Fine.

Lead on.

And somehow, 20 minutes later, you're glad you went.

10. Becoming Family

This is the important one.

Somewhere along the way, without anybody deciding it officially, we're no longer simply “the dog”.

We're part of birthdays.

Christmas.

Weekends away.

Family photographs.

Morning routines.

Quiet evenings.

Difficult days.

Happy days.

We're simply there.

And eventually you realise that's exactly what made it special.

Celebrate Your Dog This International Dog Day

Ringo doesn't think you need to buy anything to celebrate International Dog Day.

Take the longer walk.

Take another ridiculous photograph.

Let them sit beside you.

Give them an extra cuddle.

And yes, Ringo has asked me to include:

Give them an extra biscuit.

Because the ordinary days you're sharing right now will eventually become some of your favourite memories.

That's what The Ringo Pack is really about.

Not simply dog-themed products.

It's about celebrating your dog.

Happy International Dog Day.

Love,

Ringo 🐾
