Autumn Adventures With Your Dog: Make the Memories Last
There is something rather special about autumn when you've got a dog.
The air gets cooler, the walks get muddier, the leaves start changing colour and suddenly that quick trip around the block becomes an excuse to pull on a coat and head somewhere a little more adventurous.
And, if your camera roll looks anything like ours, every one of those adventures probably produces another dozen photographs of the dog.
At The Ringo Pack, we think that's exactly how it should be.
The best photographs aren't always the perfect ones
It's easy to wait for the perfect photograph: the dog sitting beautifully, looking directly at the camera, with everything neatly in place.
Ringo doesn't always get that memo.
Some of our favourite photographs are the ones where his ears are doing something ridiculous, he's investigating something he shouldn't be, or he's simply enjoying being a dog.
Those are the pictures that bring the memories flooding back.
So on your next autumn walk, don't worry too much about creating the perfect photograph. Capture the muddy paws, the windswept ears and the happy face instead.
Go somewhere your dog loves
A familiar walk can be wonderful, but autumn is also a great excuse to explore somewhere different.
Woodland paths come alive with colour, quieter beaches give dogs space to explore, and countryside walks can feel completely different once summer has passed.
From 1 October, seasonal dog restrictions finish at many UK beaches, although rules vary by location, so it's always worth checking the local restrictions before setting off. The Sun
Take water, treats and the usual dog-walking essentials, and give yourself enough time that the walk doesn't have to be rushed.
Give your dog the starring role
Try taking photographs from your dog's level rather than always standing above them.
Get down low, let them explore naturally and take several photographs rather than trying to capture everything in one shot.
You may find the best picture isn't the one you planned at all.
And don't forget photographs of you together. Dog owners are remarkably good at collecting thousands of photographs of their dogs and surprisingly bad at appearing in any of them.
From camera roll to keepsake
Our phones are brilliant at recording our dogs' lives, but some photographs deserve to escape the camera roll.
A favourite picture can become a personalised mug you use every morning, a cushion on the sofa or a keepsake celebrating the dog who made that particular adventure special.
Our My Dog Through the Years design takes that idea a little further by bringing four photographs together — puppy days, favourite adventures, milestones and today — to tell a dog's story in one design.
Because ultimately it isn't just a photograph of a dog.
It's your dog, on that day, during a little piece of your life together.
And then there's the return home…
After all that exploring comes the bit Ringo takes particularly seriously: recovering from it.
A warm, comfortable bed becomes increasingly attractive as the evenings get cooler. We've recently added selected Ralph & Co dog accessories and beds to Ringo Recommends, including the cosy Balmoral Herringbone Bolster Bed.
Apparently autumn adventures require extensive post-walk snoozing.
Ringo assures us this is essential.
Make this autumn one to remember
You don't need a huge adventure.
Choose somewhere your dog enjoys. Take your phone. Let them sniff. Take too many photographs. Get muddy.
Those ordinary little days have a habit of becoming the memories you treasure most.
And if you capture one particularly special photograph along the way, don't leave it forgotten among another 4,000 pictures in your camera roll.
Give it somewhere to live.
